Quick Search
Enter a single search term for kanji from one of the following four categories: 1) a kanji character, 2) an Onyomi reading in katakana, 3) a Kunyomi reading in hiragana, 4) a kanji's simplified English meaning.
Examples:
Note: In Quick Search mode Onyomi and Kunyomi readings may only be entered in Japanese. Please use the Advanced Search mode to search for kanji by reading in romaji.
Advanced Search

Note: Although it is possible to enter only the name of a textbook or study list after the
text: or
list: key (e.g.
text:cij or
list:ap), this would show all kanji found in the respective resource. For this reason, it is usually helpful to append a volume and/or lesson number to limit your search (e.g.
text:cij:c6 or
list:ap:c3).
Please refer to Supported Textbooks and Study Lists on our website for additional details on the division of textbooks into volumes and/or chapters/lessons as well as textbook kanji not supported by Kanji alive.

Search Results
All kanji search results are initially shown in a single block, sorted by kanji stroke number. Two additional sort modes are available for viewing kanji, grouped together either by radical stroke number or kanji stroke number. In these two modes all kanji in a group are further sorted by the canonical order of their Japanese radicals. In the results, the radicals are shown in grey and in a smaller type size to the left of their respective kanji.
